Power of the Purse Highlights Local Impact
The 22nd annual Power of the Purse, hosted by Women United, highlighted organizations making a difference in the fight against food insecurity. Women United is an affinity group of the Community Foundation and United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties. The event brought together community leaders and supporters committed to lasting change. Provision Packs was honored to participate and share its story.
Carrie Torres Shares the Story of Provision Packs
Provision Packs founder, Carrie Torres, delivered the keynote speech and spoke about the organization’s journey. Since 2015, Provision Packs has grown from serving one school to providing more than 10,000 meals each week. Today, the program reaches children at more than 20 schools across Volusia and Flagler counties. Its mission is to ensure children have access to food on weekends and during school breaks without requiring families to show proof of need.
Building Long-Term Sustainability
This year, Provision Packs took an important step toward long-term sustainability by creating the Lightnin’ Legacy Endowment Fund. This fund will allow the organization to continue supporting children and families for generations to come.
Introducing Feeding Soles
During the event, Provision Packs also announced a new initiative called Feeding Soles. The program provides well-fitting shoes to children in need. In her keynote, Torres explained, “A child who can walk into a classroom with shoes that fit will walk taller, learn better, and dream bigger, all with a full belly of food, because each of you care.”
Addressing Food Insecurity in Volusia County
Funds raised through Power of the Purse support families in the ALICE population. These households include people who are employed but still struggle to cover basic expenses. In Volusia County, more than 13 percent of residents face food insecurity. Programs like Provision Packs remain critical in helping children and families overcome these challenges.
Gratitude for Community Support
Provision Packs expressed gratitude to United Way, the event organizers, volunteers, and supporters who make its work possible. With continued community support, the organization can meet immediate needs such as hunger and basic supplies while also building programs that create long-term opportunities for children to thrive.
